Accounting is one of the busiest sections of the Odoo 20 release notes. Several changes touch daily work directly: paying bills, reconciling, handling currencies and valuing stock. Here is a factual summary.
Payments and reconciliation
- Pay bills from Odoo. Pay bills one by one or in batches, with a single signature, through a new interface for payment initiation service providers (PISP).
- Double-payment prevention. The payment wizard detects pending payments, deducts them from the amount due and sorts outstanding payments by date.
- Matching rules. Set a payment tolerance and matching order for automatic bill and invoice reconciliation. Automatic bank reconciliation can be re-run on demand.
- Bank consistency. Every journal entry that affects a bank account must now come from a bank transaction. A new bank reconciliation summary report shows reconciled and unreconciled items at a chosen date.
- Clearer payment statuses. "In Process" becomes "Paid", and "Paid" becomes "Reconciled".
- Withholding tax. Bills show Amount Due, Withhold Due and Net Due, and you can pay each part separately.
Currencies
- A Cumulative Translation Adjustment (CTA) line now appears on the balance sheet, trial balance and general ledger. It balances the differences caused by using different rate types (historical or closing) across account categories, and it is auditable.
- Exchange gains and losses are grouped into one line per invoice, with details on demand. Conversion rates are shown when registering foreign-currency payments.
Bills and invoices
- Bill line prediction. When you enter or import a bill, Odoo suggests product, account, tax and analytic distribution from your bill history.
- Improved purchase order matching, with a summary of what was matched, warnings on price or quantity differences, and the option to unmatch.
- Intercompany vendor bills are automatically matched with their synchronized purchase orders.
- Invoice reminders can be sent manually or automatically, and all generated attachments (PDF, XML) can be downloaded as a zip.
- Approved employee expenses now create draft bills in the expense journal, so they are reviewed alongside other vendor bills.
Inventory valuation
- When a product's cost changes after delivery (for example through a landed cost), the delivery value, and in perpetual accounting the invoice cost, is updated retroactively.
- Accrual entries (bills to receive, billed not received, invoices to issue, invoiced not delivered) can be made directly from the inventory valuation closing report.
- Stock and valuation can now be managed without the Inventory app.
Structure and AI
Account groups are replaced by parent accounts, and account codes become optional. Asset models are simplified into depreciation models. Taxes are restricted to their fiscal positions. The AI assistant can give insights into your finances, based only on the accounting data in your own database.
How to get it
Odoo 20 is available now for new databases on Odoo Online and Odoo.sh. For existing databases, Odoo expects to open its upgrade platform around the end of November 2026, with a test mode available earlier. If your database has custom modules, plan a test upgrade first: that is where most of the real work sits.
